Summary key points of this interview:
Ayurveda is a science that aims to use food, lifestyle activities, and routines to balance out the energetic composition or dosha of a person to bring about optimal health mentally, physically, and spiritually. .
A dosha is a specific type of energetic makeup that a person can have. There are 3 doshas: kapha, pitta, and vata. These energetic qualities are composed of the elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Vata: air/space. Pitta: Fire/water. Kapha: earth/water.
We are composed of all 3 doshas, but usually one or two are dominant. The objective of Ayurveda is to bring all 3 of these doshas into balance.
These doshas govern certain times of life, certain times of day, and certain times of year. The fall/winter time is the vata time.
Prakriti is our individual constitution of dosha - we are born with this, and it doesn’t change.
Vikriti is the change in our constitution depending on imbalance, balance, time of year, time of life, etc. This changes due to circumstances.
